York's development planning brings together various stakeholders, including city officials, urban designers, architects, and community members, to create a harmonious vision for the city's future. With a solid commitment to sustainable growth and livability, York is a city that prioritises both the needs of its residents and the preservation of its unique character.

This blog will discover everything about York Region Development Planning, where innovative ideas and careful considerations shape the city's growth.

Status of Development Application - York Region

The York Region reviews and approves the site development in York plans and applications the users submit under the Planning Act. It also needs to be noted that provincial planning regulations, as well as regional interests, are secured by the implementation of the Regional Official Plan.

Apart from the Regional Official Plan Amendment Applications, the local municipality processes all land development applications. You can contact the appropriate local municipality for any queries related to your application process.

For different land development application types, the York region plays various roles. These are as follows:

  • Commenting Agency: The role of the commenting agency is to make plans of condominiums, subdivisions, consents, and site plans, along with minor variance land development applications along with applications to amend the Zoning order and Parkway Belt West Plan.
  • Approval Authority: The approval authority is responsible for all official amendment applications and official local plans.
  • Engineering Approvals: It also approves work within the Region’s right of way. It impacts the regional infrastructure related to development activities.

What are the Development Charges for Regional Areas?

Any new land development in York needs to pay development charges. As far as the zoning by-law amendment and site plan applications are concerned, the applicant will need to execute an Agreement with the York Region. This agreement will state a date on which development charge rates are frozen for furthering the development proposal.
