People and Culture of Georgetown

For many years before the arrival of Europeans, indigenous people lived in the area that is today known as Halton Hills. The land was bought from the Mississauga Nation by British officials in 1818. A farm and a woollen mill were founded on Silver Creek by George Kennedy, one of Charles Kennedy's brothers. Georgetown initially became a village in 1865 and later, in 1922, got its township title. After World War II, developers started boosting local industry and job prospects; the population started to increase significantly. Georgetown is home to more than 45,000 people.
