The original name of Madoc was MacKenzie’s Mills and it was named after Donald MacKenzie. He was the one to build the grist and saw mills here. It was also called Hastings for a brief period before being renamed Madoc Township. During the 19th Century, people used to travel on carriages and horses from Ottawa to Toronto and Madoc was more like a halfway stopover. It was until 1998 that Madoc remained an incorporated municipality. Madoc is known for its mining history, and it was in the year 1866 that miners discovered gold during the process.
