The metropolitan government and the Ontario provincial government had proposed to create a six-lane North-South expressway during the 1950s and 1960s. This was a key division of Grand Trunk and the Canadian National Railway. Originally, the railway was supposed to run from Guelph to Southampton. However, Listowel was needed to link to the railway. Along with this, it was decided a yard with maintenance shops would also be needed. However, the subdivisions were later abandoned and the railroad decided to build a junction and then named the station Palmerstone.
