In the former Borough of East York in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, lies a neighbourhood known as Thorncliffe Park. The Don River on the south side, Leaside Bridge, Millwood Road, and Laird Drive on the west side, the West Don River on the east side, and Eglinton Avenue East on the north side are recognised by the City of Toronto as Thorncliffe Park's limits.
The wealthy Dominion Brewing Co. founder, Robert T. Davies, owned the farm where Thorncliffe Park now stands. He was an enthusiastic horse racer who competed with both Thoroughbred and Standardbred horses under the Thorncliffe Stable name. Following Davies' demise in 1916, his estate sold the site to a consortium of Baltimore, Maryland, investors, who subsequently developed the Thorncliffe Park Raceway racetrack. From 1917 until 1952, the track served as the venue for both thoroughbred and harness racing before being sold for real estate development. In addition to a handful of structures that adopted racecourse stable names like Churchill, Maple Glen, two streets named Grandstand Place and Milepost Place now honour Willow Glen, the historic racetrack location.
